This website is aimed at introducing the UNC student body to fish they most likely have eaten, but are not aware of the exact species they are eating and implications of their dietary choice. Many frozen and mass produced food items that are readily available at your local grocery store or fast food chain are simply labeled as white fish, however, rarely do they specify the species of fish used, especially on the label or advertising. When the public eats “whitefish,” they often overlook the potentiality that what they are eating could possibly be an endangered, threatened, or overfished species. The public needs to have awareness of the fish they are eating so they can make informed choices to preserve not only our ocean’s natural resources, but as a result, our planet’s well being as a whole.
